FRANS is concerned with field trials demonstrating an optically supported millimetre wave radio link as a final drop to provide rapid, flexible deployment of broadband interactive services. It merges existing passive optical networks (PONs) with a photonic technique for generation, modulation and transmission FRANS is concerned with field trials demonstrating an optically supported millimetre wave radio link as a final drop to provide rapid, flexible deployment of broadband interactive services. It merges existing passive optical networks (PONs) with a photonic technique for generation, modulation and transmission of information bearing milli-metre wave signals to a hybrid fibre radio customer access system. Two trials are planned, using different bitrates and based on different multiple access techniques in the uplink.
· A 622 Mbit/s downlink with TDMA uplink of 40 Mbit/s aggregate (~2 Mbit/s per user), both with milli-metre wave radio part working in the 30 GHz range.
· 155 Mbit/s downlink with millimetre wave radio inter-face at about 30 GHz and a CDMA uplink with 1 to 5 times 2Mbit/s per user and a microwave radio part in the 2.5 GHz range.
The Swiss partners are involved in the realisation of the CDMA uplink of the 155Mb/s trial. At least two users of a joint field trial with the project AC 032 ATHOC will be equipped with a fibre radio link for delivery of distributive services, e.g. near Video on Demand (VoD), and interactive services (interactive VoD, teleshopping, teleinformation). The CDMA uplink is operating in the microwave frequency range. At the central unit the RF signals from different CDMA transmitters are received using a local antenna or a fibre-optically remoted antenna.
The Hochschule für Technik und Architektur (HTA) Chur contributed to the specification of the interfaces between the different blocks of the CDMA link and between the CDMA link, the mm-wave down link and the ATHOC system components.
In order to enable the usage of the ATM 25Mb/s interfaces at the customer side, we evaluated this interface and specified its adaptation to the CDMA system based on the UTOPIA interface of the ATM Forum.
For the CDMA return link we have designed, realised and tested the frame building function blocks (framer / deframer including forward error correction) and the interfaces. The successfull tests have been carried out in conjunction with the radio system at LETI (Grenoble, F) and with the field trial system at Alcatel Telecom (Stuttgart, D).
A measurement environment has been set up enabling generation, transmission and comparison of ATM cells for test purposes. Furthermore a service test platform has been realised allowing to assess the impact of residual transmission errors on selected services.
In the frame of this project we have been able to contribute to a fieldtrial using advanced technology. The knowledge gained from the project is now used for education and is available for technical support of external parties.
