This WP will establish a new NEST building unit, NEST Beyond.Zero, within Empa’s NEST demonstration platform. This unit will function as a fast-track environment for upscaling research innovations in Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) using biochar in the building and construction sector. Through close collaboration between Empa research groups (Empa-CA and Empa-BEMC), the NEST team (Empa-NEST), industrial partners (Implenia), and public authorities (ZH-AWEL), the project creates a unique opportunity to bridge the gap between research and practice and to support the development of policies enabling broad deployment of the proposed CDR strategies. NEST has proven to be a powerful catalyst for accelerating innovation in construction. The novel materials and technologies developed in this project require a controlled testing environment where they can be safely validated. At the same time, NEST’s high visibility in Switzerland and internationally will strengthen outreach efforts and promote acceptance of these innovations. Its established upscaling process follows a transdisciplinary approach, integrating partners across the value chain from research to market implementation. The new materials envisaged in Beyond.Zero demand adapted manufacturing processes and dedicated machinery. The first scaling phase will focus on small-scale production lines within the unit. In a second phase, materials and systems will be optimized based on lessons learned, and production processes will be redesigned for higher efficiency, advancing them toward industrial implementation. The involvement of Implenia, a leading construction contractor, is essential for this transition. To accelerate market uptake and stimulate new initiatives in the real-estate sector, targeted communication activities and dedicated events will be organized.
