The research project has been selected in January 2025 by SpaceX after internal scientific review for implementation on the Fram2 private astronaut mission with launch NET March 22nd, 2025, but probably during Q2/2025. The research question seeks to explore the pivotal role that understanding genomic architecture and its adaptive mechanisms plays in human space exploration. Short-term studies have already demonstrated that microgravity induces significant alterations in gene expression, affecting thousands of genes, with these changes being regulated by the dynamic chromatin. Now, it is crucial to investigate whether long-term microgravity will lead to environment-driven adaptative responses of gene expression and to reveal if these adaptations will enable humans to survive and thrive in space for longer time. The experiment is a first exploratory experiment, which is planned to be continued on further SpaceX or ESA astronaut missions. We are the only project from Switzerland selected for this mission.
