Popillia japonica (Pj) ist ein Schädling aus Japan, der vor kurzem nach Europa eingeschleppt wurde. In der Schweiz ist er in Teilen der Kantone Tessin und Wallis sowie in der Umgebung des internationalen Flughafens Zürich und in Basel etabliert. Angesichts des breiten Spektrums an Wirtspflanzenarten und der wahrscheinlichen negativen Auswirkungen auf die Landwirtschaft und die Ökosystemleistungen, ist die Erforschung von Pj von entscheidender Bedeutung für die Unterstützung der Tilgung, Eindämmung und des Managements. Mit PUPILLA wollen wir (i) die Ökologie von Pj besser verstehen, einschliesslich der Präferenzen für Lebensraum, Wirtspflanzen und Eiablageorte sowie der Landschaftsmerkmale, die die Ausbreitung und Kolonisierung von Pj vorantreiben; (ii) die Entwicklung und Erprobung von Instrumenten auf der Grundlage von eDNA-Techniken zur Früherkennung und gezielteren Überwachung; (iii) die Erarbeitung von Bekämpfungsstrategien für das Weinberg-Agrarökosystem auf der Grundlage von attract-and-kill Ansätzen, die sich gegebenenfalls auf andere Anbausysteme übertragen lassen würden. Forschungsaktivitäten werden in den Befallsgebieten der Kantone Tessin und Wallis durchgeführt.

PUPILLA wird die Behörden bei der Entscheidung und die Pflanzenschutzdienste durch die Bereitstellung von Überwachungsinstrumenten und wichtigen Informationen über die Ökologie von Pj unterstützen. Die Entwicklung von Bekämpfungsstrategien wird entscheidend sein, um die ökologische Widerstandsfähigkeit und eine nachhaltige Pflanzenproduktion zu gewährleisten, die allen Akteuren des Agrarsektors zugutekommt.

Popillia japonica (Pj) is a pest insect native to Japan that was recently introduced into Europe. In Switzerland, it is established in parts of the Cantons of Ticino and Valais, and present around Zurich International Airport and in Basel. Given Pj’s wide spectrum of host plant species and its likely nega-tive impacts on agriculture and ecosystem services, research on Pj is critical for supporting eradica-tion, containment and management. With PUPILLA, we aim at (i) better understanding the ecology of Pj, including habitat, host plant and oviposition site preferences, as well as landscape features that drive its spread and colonization; (ii) developing and testing tools based on eDNA techniques for early detection and more targeted surveillance; (iii) developing control strategies in the vineyard agroeco-system based on attract-and-kill approaches, which may potentially be transferred to other cropping systems. The research activities will be conducted in the infested zones of the Cantons of Ticino and Valais.

PUPILLA will support the authorities in the decision-making and the Plant Protection Services by providing surveillance tools and critical information on Pj ecology. The development of control strate-gies will be crucial to ensure environmental resilience and sustainable crop production, benefitting all actors in the agricultural sector.
