(Anglais)
Cyanobacterial blooms are a growing environmental and public health concern. Among their toxins, microcystins (MCs) are the most prevalent and hazardous, causing hepatotoxicity through inhibition of protein phosphatases. In Switzerland, blooms occur mainly in eutrophic lakes, where fish and crayfish may accumulate cyanotoxins in the flesh. However, the link between water concentrations and toxin levels in fishery products remains poorly understood, limiting accurate risk assessments. A first-level evaluation in 2025 could not exclude risks for consumers, highlighting the need for Swiss-specific data.
This project will test the following hypothesis: high toxin concentrations in fish and crayfish occur primarily in eutrophic lakes where water toxins are also elevated. We will sample two fish species (15–20 individuals each) and crayfish, conduct histopathology on fish livers and muscle, and quantify toxins in muscle tissue using UPLC-DAD-ESI-MS/MS and GC-MS analysis for free and bound microcystins. Results will refine the risk assessment and support monitoring frameworks for public health.
Objectifs du projet
(Anglais)
The objective of the project is based on the following hypothesis:
1. High concentrations of toxins in fishery products (fish and crayfish) occur mainly in eutrophic lakes where high concentrations of toxins are also observed.
The results of this project will be used to carry out a new risk assessment of cyanotoxins.
