A novel idea is to use additive microfabrication for SiN/SiO2 waveguides and instead of depositing a full layer of SiO2 to complete the waveguide, print glass (inkjet printed solution of silica) only where it is needed. This would allow simplifying PICs microfabrication by reducing processing steps.
