The DepoTES project is investigating the possibility of thermally activating landfill material and thus using landfills as seasonal thermal energy storage facilities. To this end, plastic pipes are installed in the landfill body as heat exchangers during filling. This allows the subsoil to be tapped more cheaply and efficiently than with conventional geothermal probes. As part of the project, different system integrations are being investigated at specific locations and the thermal properties of landfill bodies are being measured. In addition, promising pipe materials are being laid in landfill operations under the load of heavy machinery and tested for tightness and pressure resistance after one year. The proposed investigations are intended to prepare and promote the implementation of pilot projects.
