Funding is requested for Technologies to Enhance Space Situational Awareness (TESSA). The objective of this project is to enhance Switzerland’s observational capabilities, supporting both Swiss and European Space Situational Awareness (SSA) activities, with the strengthening of Swiss
scientific competitiveness in astronomical instrumentation as an added value.
The proposed project period is 1 December 2025 - 30 November 2029, plus a future suggested prolongation of 3 years for scientific applications. 3,021,480 CHF is requested across four years, primarily allocated to the commissioning of a cutting-edge adaptive optics system at the University of Bern’s Zimmerwald observatory and scientific staff to develop algorithms and exploit images obtained from the adaptive optics enabled Zimmerwald.
In brief, 3 work packages are defined: (WP1) The design, assembly and commissioning of a highcadence adaptive optics system for Zimmerwald observatory to enable resolved imaging of objects in Low Earth Orbit. (WP2) Collaborative observations with the adaptive optics enabled Zimmerwald for the purpose of validating state-of-the-art photometry techniques, enhancing the utility of medium sized telescopes throughout Switzerland. (WP3) The development and validation of novel attitude/position estimation techniques on both resolved and unresolved images using state-of-theart machine vision techniques.
