LiONS addresses key barriers to commercializing next-generation high-energy-density, safe, and sustainable batteries for electric transport through 5 innovative objectives. It optimizes thin Li metal anodes using a scalable, solvent- and binder-free physical vapor deposition (PVD) process with a protective coating (≤1 µm) also deposited by PVD to mitigate dendrites, enhancing anode cyclability by ≥1.5x. Non-flammable composite solid electrolytes with ionic conductivities ≥1 mS/cm. Integration of cobalt-free cathodes and use of high-throughput computational screening to accelerate material design. The project aims to deliver LiM solid-state batteries with >400 Wh/kg energy density, non-flammable electrolytes, and >80% capacity retention after 600 cycles at 2C, aligning with BATT4EU SRIA, GreenDeal19 and EU industrial strategy. LiONS supports clean mobility and EU strategic autonomy, fostering job creation and sustainable growth.
