Short description

The evaluation of the Swiss Better Gold Initiative (SBG) shows that the project is generally on track to achieve its goals, however, challenges remain in terms of monitoring, inclusivity, and maintaining alignment with local contexts. Specifically, the fragility of the value chain and the need for better harmonization of the monitoring system across the participating countries are highlighted. The Swiss Better Gold Initiative for Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (SBG for ASM) is a SECO-funded program promoting responsible gold sourcing and sustainable development in Peru, Colombia, and Bolivia. Launched in 2013, it supports small-scale miners through improved practices, regulatory engagement, and market access, using a stepwise improvement model and incentives like the “impact premium.” Despite good progress and high market demand, challenges remain in monitoring, inclusivity, and maintaining alignment with local contexts and stakeholders.
