Abstract
(Englisch)
The amount of electricity generated from renewable sources needs to increase to meetthe EU’s aim of becoming carbon neutral by 2050. However, the connection of renewablesources to the power grid causes harmonics which lower network power quality andincrease electricity losses in e. g. , power transformers and high voltage alternating current(HVAC) cables. The industry thus requires new HV metrology tools to monitor theincreased level of grid harmonics, as well as instrumentation to quantify the impact ofthese harmonics on the efficiency of power transformers and HV cables, next to newmethods to evaluate the reliability of high voltage direct current (HVDC) grid connections. Therefore, this project will develop new 1) wideband live connectable current or voltagesensors to monitor and calibrate substation instrumentation, 2) capabilities for determiningthe power transformer losses that are caused by grid harmonics, 3) methods fordetermining harmonic losses from HVAC cables, and 4) partial discharge (PD) monitoringtechniques for fault detection and location in HVDC cables.
