Strengthening the National HIV Response
The Newlands Clinic (NC) is a national Centre of Excellence for the comprehensive care of HIV patients with complex and advanced diseases. Through its training centre and research capacities it informs and strengthens Zimbabwe’s national HIV response. Managed by the Swiss Ruedi Lüthy Foundation, Switzerland’s support to the Newlands Clinic contributes to Switzerland’s visibility and excellent reputation in the country.

| Contexte |
Zimbabwe remains amongst the countries with the highest HIV prevalence rate worldwide for the age group of 15 to 49 years (11.6% in 2021). The country struggles to address the crisis, with inadequate public resources to provide quality services to the poor, and a shortage of health workers to deliver quality care and treatment. Thanks to Swiss support, over the past 20 years the Newlands Clinics has evolved into a centre of excellence for the comprehensive care of AIDS patients in Zimbabwe. Financially, the clinic remains heavily dependent on Swiss privat and public donations, and the NC’s costly treatment model limits its potential for replicability and scale up. Stepping up private sector engagement and accessing in-country funds will become essential for NC to ensure the viability of its operations. |

- 9000 OI/ART patients in care by 2028
- 10 provinces supported with training and mentorship
- 5331 HCWs trained in Advanced HIV Management by 2028
- 9200 HCWs trained by 2028 in HIV related short courses and mentorship
- 850 girls immunised for HPV per year
- 3200 women screened for cervical cancer per year by 2028
- 1000 women receiving access to modern methods of family planning services
- Viability of operations strenghtened through diversification of partners/donors
Principaux résultats antérieurs:
- 4076 Health Care Workers have been trained between 2020-2023 on HIV Management (advanced and basic courses)
- One Continued Medical Education meeting held at a provincial Hospital for the local Health Care Workers in 2022
- 7720 patients in care at the NC (2022), following a steady increase since 2016 (5776), with a very low mortality rate of 1% (70 patients)
- The NC’s Mental and Social Health Department provided counselling to 1050 referred patients
- 2286 women were screened for cervical cancer in 2022
- The enrolment of patients with complex diseases and third-line patients significantly increased the cost of comprehensive care and will likely further increase the mortality and morbidity rates
