The overall objectives of this project are to test heavy, battery/pantograph-powered shunting locomotives in relation to the performance requirements and operational framework conditions of SBB Cargo. The following results are expected in two thematic blocks. • Technical feasibility of an innovative traction system with battery technology for the operation of heavy shunting locomotives: The battery technology is to be tested under real scenarios with clearly defined and differentiated requirements for power and energy availability under different loads, gradients (‰) and speeds at different SBB Cargo locations. • Operational feasibility: Systematically gather initial operational experience with the allelectric shunting locomotives (mostly prototypes) under real operating conditions and test the operational capability of the vehicles. A catalogue of criteria is used to check the functionality of the various locomotives in everyday operation (battery capacity during various operating situations, effective battery charging options (infrastructure and timing)). The entire project is scheduled to run from Q3/2024 to Q1/2028 and consists of four phases: (i) development of the test concept, (ii) operational testing of the first vehicle, (iii) operational testing of a maximum of three further vehicles from different manufacturers with different battery technologies and/or drive concepts, (iv) final project report and communication of the results to the industry and the public
