Our work deals with two main lines of research. First we study the origin and functional properties of dendritic cells (DC). In particular we want to understand how DC discriminate different stimuli from pathogens, inflammation and T cells and how they can induce different types of T cell responses ranging from Th1 or Th2 to cytotoxicity or tolerance. We also study the relative role played in the immune response by two subsets of myeloid and plasmacytoid DC. A second line of research deals with the mechanisms of T and B cell activation. In particular we are studying the differential capacity of naïve and memory T cells to respond to signals from the antigen receptors (TCR or BCR) or from cytokine receptors. We are also studying mechanisms that are relevant to maintain T and B cell memory pools under homeostatic conditions. The work is done both in the human and in the mouse system and should provide new insights into strategies to enhance or suppress the immune response.
