Cranial Computed Tomography (CCT), the current standard method to identify intracerebral lesions, is overused in case of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). This results in avoidable waiting time in the emergency department (ED), risks of radiation exposure for patients and to a waste of ED resources use and costs. Blood biomarkers of brain injury may correlate with imaging abnormalities and cognitive outcome. In this context, we are conducting a large clinical study (BRAINI) with mTBI adult patients to explore the performance of an automated assay measuring two promising blood biomarkers, GFAP and UCH-L1. BRAINI2 will focus on two poorly explored mTBI populations: the elderly where falls and pre-injury medications with anticoagulant drugs are common, and paediatrics where biomarkers data are very limited. BRAINI2 will establish an age-specific algorithm with objective mTBI diagnostic and prognostic indicators providing economical and health benefits.
