Abstract
(Englisch)
Executive Summary We propose a 6 ETCS Credit Doctoral-level course to train the next generation of scientists and engineers in the interdisciplinary and rapidly accelerating field of Li-ion batteries. The course consists of three main pillars: (1) online lectures offered by experts (on battery fabrication, characterization, spectroscopy, simulations and advanced diagnostics), (2) working cases and challenges from industrial partners to be solved by student teams and (3) a venture-creation summer school. Popular Project Description Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries have radically transformed portable electronics from mobile phones to laptops. These batteries are now omnipresent in our modern world. Moreover, we are now witnessing a global shift within the automotive industry towards the adoption of electric vehicles, predicted to be a trillion-euro market by 2050. ELMO-LION requires no prior knowledge of battery technology and will cover all major aspects, from fundamental operation to commercial application. The school will accept Doctoral students from science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to understand fundamental basic operational principles of a Li-ion battery, know materials and processes involved in the manufacturing of commercial batteries, explain real-world applications and diagnostic of Li-on batteries. A deep scientific knowledge about battery technologies is also needed to enable circular economy measures such as re manufacturing, reuse, repurposing and recycling. In summary, ELMO-LION is a highly innovative and multidisciplinary educational project devoted to train a skilled workforce along the entire Li-ion battery value chain. Students will receive the fundamental skills to address the demand of European companies and industries in order to be competitive and sustainable. The students will also be introduced to the EIT Jumpstarter business creation instrument to foster venture-creation.
