Scanning microwave microscopy (SMM), SMM measurement head with mediator, Bioscanner, detection of biological tissue abnormalities
Short description
(English)

Scanning microwave microscopy (SMM) is used successfully in the semiconductor industry, but the technology has so far been used rather sparingly in the life sciences. It has already been shown (e.g. in Kazemi et al. (2018)) that the method can be used to detect abnormalities in biological tissues. SMM can also be used in other areas of the life sciences, such as in the production of functionalized proteins for process monitoring. This project aims to test and promote these applications.

Furthermore, SMM has so far only been used in laboratories, as the technology is too fragile for many industrial (in-line) environments. The patent application for the SMM measurement head with mediator presents a solution to this problem. The methodology developed and the measurement setup are to be further promoted and developed in the project.

Project aims
(English)
1. The patent for the SMM measuring head with mediator will be strengthened and promoted. The results of the detection of abnormalities in biological tissue will be jointly published with the University of Bern.

2. The feasibility of the discolosure of the invention of the bioscanner will be investigated, and a positive result would lead to a patent application.

3. the activities of the SMM laboratory in the field of life sciences will be expanded.
