Kurzbeschreibung
(Englisch)

As the designated national reference laboratory (NRL) for process contaminants in Switzerland, the Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office (FVSO) requires an accredited (STS119) analytical method to be available for the determination of MCPD and Glycidol Esters (GE) in foodstuffs.

Projektziele
(Englisch)

As part of this small-scale project, work was carried out to validate the analytical method for the determination of free and ester-bound 2- and 3-monochloropropane-1,2-diol (MCPD) and GE (method M 284). The previous validation only covered "vegetable and animal oils and fats". Now, "composite non-aqueous" and "predominantly aqueous foods" should also be validated. The project consisted of three objectives:

Objective 1: Validation of compound non-aqueous foods.
The aim was to validate at least one matrix category. During the project, the validation for the matrix categories baby crackers and baby porridge was completed, and a validation report published. Partial validation is available for infant formula in powder form. The objective was revised and approved by the STS 0119 testing laboratory. Further matrix categories will follow at a later date. See also Objective 3.

Objective 2: Validation of predominantly aqueous foods.
At least one matrix category should be included in the validation. Initial measurements are available, validation will be carried out at a later date, and a subsequent comparative laboratory study will include these predominantly aqueous foods, and would allow the detection of 2- and 3-MCPD and GE in these matrixes to be validated.

Objective 3: Participation in the §64 working group "MCPD and GE"
The Organic Analyses and References Laboratory is now represented in the §64 working group "MCPD and GE" under the leadership of BVL Germany. The WG is preparing a validation study for an analytical method for the collection of procedures for sampling and testing of foodstuffs in accordance with §64 of the German Food and Feed Code. Further laboratory tests are planned.

Abstract
(Englisch)

The objectives achieved so far with the extended validation of method M 284 are important for the work as the National Reference Laboratory for Process Contaminants (NRL-PC). They form the basis for a better understanding of the analysis method and will be required should the Organic Analyses and References Laboratory need to carry out an arbitration analysis.

The validation results were summarized in a validation report and filed in the accredited area STS 0119. Method M 284 was adapted. It is now available for the measurement of composite non-aqueous foodstuffs and oils and fats.
