Kurzbeschreibung

Although there seems to be a clear trend toward the development of edible nano-coatings, it is not clear for many of the products described in the literature whether they are already on the market or just under development. In Switzerland, the FSVO is only aware of one product for which marketing is intended. The analysis of products on the market is complex because it is hardly possible to differentiate between conventional coatings and those in nano-form. As for nano-inks and nano-adhesives, although they seem further away from widespread application than nano-coatings, it is reasonable to expect rapid evolution with the advent of new technologies in the near future. Moreover, Switzerland recently published a list of food-grade chemicals or ingredients for inks that can be used for food packaging becoming the only European country with specific legislation regulating food packaging inks. These facts might provide a starting point for addressing regulatory hurdles. If it turns out that there will be more edible nano-coatings, nano-inks, and nano-adhesives on the market, clear criteria would have to be worked out based on which health risks can be assessed.

The project should answer following questions:

What are the functionalities of nanocoatings, nano-inks, and nano-adhesives and their actual applications on the market?

How can we reliably detect and quantify them on/in food products?

How safe are these nanomaterials on foods intended for direct consumption?
