Description succincte
(Allemand)

Description succincte
(Anglais)

In the context of antimicrobial treatments, there is an urgent need for action at different levels: a) the adequate and comparable reporting of treatment figures and b) the personality traits of the farmer associated with the decision to use antimicrobials – both are investigated in the present study. Prescription data from the IS ABV will be used as the basis for both levels. The second level of this study is carried out by phone - interviews in which an established interview technique is used to influence the interviewee to a minimal extend.

The aim of the study is a) to develop recommendations that could be beneficial to the quality of reporting of IS-ABV data and b) to improve understanding and  decision-making processes concerning the usage of antimicrobials of farmers.

In the medium term, the study serves to improve the interpretation of existing raw data to and to develop recommendations for different personality types of farmer in order to influence their decisions with regard to so-called "prudent use”.

Objectifs du projet
(Anglais)

Objective 1) IS ABV prescription data allow calculation of treatment incidences using different proportions of the available raw data. The resulting treatment incidences allow national and international comparisons of IS ABV data. There are appropriate and less appropriate forms of calculation and presentation.

Objective 2) To evaluate whether farm managers of pig fattening farms use more antimicrobials per animal in their fattening pigs than farm managers of mixed farms (farms where pig fattening and dairy farming runs in parallel). A transfer ability is suspected: the ability of dairy farmers to observe individual animals has a positive effect on anti-microbial consumption on the respective farm (=better animal observation learned through dairy farming as well as more time spent in the barn than pig farmers; both leads to better animal observation in fattening pigs). Socio-economic factors such as the latter (animal observation abilities) and also others have great relevance for antimi-crobial consumption (3-6). New insights into these factors may help to provide decision-makers with a continuously adapted and updated basis for decision-making and thus help reduce antimicrobial consumption in the long term.
