Description succincte
(Allemand)
Description succincte
(Anglais)
Chlamydia abortus is the most common cause of infectious abortion in small ruminants in Switzerland. Apart from
its significance for veterinary medicine, Chlamydia abortus is a zoonotic pathogen that can cause pneumonia and
sepsis in humans and can induce abortions in pregnant women following contact with abortion material. Chlamydia
abortus-induced abortions in small ruminants are followed by massive shedding of the pathogen into the
environment. Chlamydia abortus is suggested to survive for several days in the environment in spring and, in the
case of very cold temperatures, may survive for several weeks to months. However, this has never been systematically
investigated in a study and is therefore not scientifically proven. Consequently, the viability and infectivity
in the environment may be higher or lower than currently assumed, with potentially negative effects concerning biosafety measures. With the present study, we would like to investigate the viability and infectivity of Chlamydia
abortus in the environment.
