This project develops a simulation-based foundation for the regulation of energy platforms. We chart the market outcomes of energy platforms under varying policy measures, providing regulatory authorities with a ‘car-tography’ of potentially harmful behaviour of market participants. We embed the economics of energy platforms into an analysis of competition policy infringements and models of multi-sided markets. Building on our findings, we develop a simulation engine to study the behaviour of market participants and energy platforms in different regulatory scenarios. We model market participants as artificial agents of increasing complexity to investigate the implications of decision-making by trading algorithms in the energy market, focusing on competition policy implications.
