Short description
(English)

Pumped storage is the most efficient and cost-effective solution to store electricity in the world, representing today 99% of the world's electricity storage capacity. In Switzerland, there are currently 20 large pumped storage schemes with an installed power capacity of 3’600 MW. With the expected development of solar electricity production and the development of electric mobility, it is crucial to be able to store locally the surplus of electricity generated and then to release this electricity rapidly and locally with high power, in a renewable and sustainable way. In the framework of the current electricity market, this project will investigate the hidden potential of small and medium pumped storage power plants using existing reservoirs in seven Cantons of Switzerland (Vaud, Valais, Fribourg, Bern, Jura, Neuchâtel and Tessin) representing around 50% of the whole Swiss territory. While considering the new dynamics of electricity prices, the relevance of developing profitable sites will thus be assessed by defining site selection criteria and by sizing the power plants according to new future needs.

Pumped-storage hydropower is currently the most efficient and economical electricity storage solution, accounting for nearly 96% of global storage capacity. In Switzerland, 20 large facilities provide around 4,000 MW of installed capacity. With the expansion of photovoltaic generation and the growth of electric mobility, the ability to store surplus energy locally and release it quickly, at high power, in a renewable and sustainable way has become essential for grid stability. An analysis of distribution system operators’ needs, conducted through interviews and a survey, identified a maximum storage requirement of 60 MWh. In this context, the HiDeStor project assessed the potential of small and medium pumped-storage plants, primarily using existing hydraulic infrastructure across seven cantons that cover about 50% of Switzerland’s territory. A total of 27 sites were identified, representing a technical potential of 895 MWh when storage is limited to the identified needs, with a LCOS of 0.08 CHF/kWh. Finally, a national extrapolation based on a geospatial analysis of reservoirs, considering a maximum distance of 2 km between them, suggests a theoretical storage potential of approximately 1.7 GWh across Switzerland.
