Die Erwartungen der Gesellschaft an die Haltung von Nutztieren sind hinsichtlich der Tiergesundheit und Achtung der Würde des Tieres sehr hoch. Unter Tiergesundheit im umfassenden Sinne wird die physische und psychische Gesundheit eines Nutztieres verstanden. Das Forschungsfeld befasst sich primär mit der Erforschung von präven-tiven Massnahmen zur Förderung der Nutztiergesundheit. Dies beinhaltet die Forschung über das Verhalten, die Haltung, sowie die Charakterisierung von genetischen Gesundheitsmerkmalen. Bei den Bienen kommt zusätzlich der Aspekt der Bekämpfung von spezifischen Krankheiten hinzu.

Die Haltung und Nutzung von Tieren befindet sich in einem Spannungsfeld zwischen gesellschaftlichen Anforderungen und einer standortangepassten, nachhaltigen und für die Landwirtschaftsbetriebe rentablen Produktion. Das Ziel ist es, gesunde Nutztiere zu halten, welche eine optimale Leistung in der Milch- und Fleischproduktion, bei der Bestäubung, der Landschaftspflege und der Nutzung erbringen können. Im Fokus der Forschungsaktivitäten stehen die Prüfung und Entwicklung tiergerechter Haltungssysteme, die Analyse der Auswirkungen potenziell belastender Umweltfaktoren und landwirtschaftlicher Praktiken, von Nutzungsbedingungen und -intensitäten, von Einschränkungen der natürlichen Verhaltensweisen sowie bedarfsgerechter Fütterung auf die Gesundheit von Nutztieren (inklusive Bienen und Pferde).

Society has very high expectations of livestock husbandry in terms of animal health and respect for the dignity of animals. The term ‘animal health’ in the widest sense is taken to mean the physical and mental health of a farm animal. The research field deals mainly with the study of preventive measures for the promotion of livestock health, including research on behaviour, housing, and the characterisation of genetic health traits. With bees, there is also the additional aspect of the control of specific diseases.

The keeping and use of animals gives rise to conflicting priorities between the requirements of society on the one hand and location-adapted, sustainable production that is profitable for the farms on the other. The aim is to raise healthy livestock capable of delivering an optimal performance in terms of milk and meat production, pollination, landscape conservation and use. Research activities focus on the testing and development of humane housing systems and on the analysis of the effects of potentially detrimental environmental factors and agricultural practices, conditions and intensities of use, restrictions of natural behaviour, and needs-oriented feeding on the health of livestock (including bees and horses).

Les attentes de la société en matière de détention des animaux de rente sont très élevées en ce qui concerne la santé animale et le respect de la dignité de l'animal. La santé animale au sens le plus large du terme désigne la santé physique et psychique d'un animal de rente. Le champ de recherche concerne principalement l'étude des mesures préventives visant à promouvoir la santé des animaux d'élevage. Elle inclut la recherche sur le comportement, les conditions de détention ainsi que la caractérisation des caractères génétiques relatifs à la santé. Dans le cas des abeilles, vient s’ajouter l'aspect de la lutte contre des maladies spécifiques

La détention et l'utilisation des animaux se trouvent dans un champ de tension entre les exigences sociales et une production durable, adaptée au site et rentable pour les exploitations agricoles. L'objectif est la détention d’animaux de rente en bonne santé, capables de fournir des performances optimales en matière de production de lait et de viande, de pollinisation, d’entretien et d'utilisation du paysage. Les activités de recherche sont axées sur le contrôle et le développement de systèmes d'élevage respectueux des animaux, l'analyse de l'impact de facteurs environnementaux et de pratiques agricoles potentiellement nuisibles, des conditions et de l'intensité d'utilisation, des limitations aux comportements naturels sur la santé des animaux de rente (y compris les abeilles et les chevaux) ainsi que sur les pratiques d'alimentation conformes aux besoins.

Le aspettative della società nei confronti della detenzione degli animali da reddito sono molto elevate per quanto riguarda la salute e il rispetto della dignità degli animali. Per salute animale in generale s’intende la salute fisica e psichica di un animale da reddito. Il presente campo di ricerca si occupa principalmente dello studio di misure di prevenzione atte a promuovere la salute degli animali da reddito, il che comprende la ricerca sul comportamento, sulla detenzione e sulla caratterizzazione dei tratti genetici della salute. Nel caso delle api, si aggiunge inoltre l’aspetto della lotta contro malattie specifiche.

La detenzione e l’utilizzo degli animali devono soddisfare esigenze contrastanti tra loro: quelle della società e quelle di una produzione adeguata alle condizioni locali, sostenibile e redditizia per le aziende agricole. L’obiettivo è detenere animali da reddito sani, che riescano a fornire prestazioni ottimali nella produzione di latte e carne, nell’impollinazione, nella cura del paesaggio e in termini di utilizzo. Le attività di ricerca si concentrano sulla sperimentazione e sullo sviluppo di sistemi di detenzione rispettosi degli animali nonché sull’analisi degli effetti dei fattori ambientali potenzialmente negativi e delle pratiche agricole, delle condizioni e delle intensità di utilizzo, delle restrizioni al comportamento naturale nonché dell’alimentazione adeguata ai bisogni per la salute degli animali da reddito (api e cavalli inclusi).

• Promozione di una detenzione e di un utilizzo sostenibili degli equidi
• Rendere più sostenibile il futuro della detenzione di bestiame da latte con una gestione efficiente delle sostanze nutritive e meno emissioni, tenendo conto della salute e del benessere degli animali
• Sostenibilità della produzione di carne bovina: ottimizzazione del compromesso tra sistemi di allevamento robusti ed efficienti da un lato e qualità e sicurezza della carne dall'altro
