Based on a "Play–Fairway Analysis" (PFA), the favorability of the Rhône Valley for geothermal re-sources will be evaluated and displayed on maps. At the same time, a workflow for the exploration of geothermal resources in the Inner Alpine domain will be developed. The project consists of the following work packages: (1) Reconnaissance studies on known thermal springs and literature review to define expected plays, (2) development of a GIS-based data management structure, (3) characterization of the chemistry and the temperature distribution of thermal waters and groundwaters, (4) quantification of faults and their activity, (5) development of qualitative temperature and permeability maps and (6) synthesis and identification of thermal anomalies in the Rhône Valley. The expected outcomes will serve to guide future planning of geothermal projects. In addition, the developed methodology will provide a template applicable to exploration for geothermal resources in other areas of the Inner Alpine domain.
