In the project Recycle4Bio, the N utilization of liquid and solid digestate as well as cattle slurry was investigated. In the second phase of the project, two measures to increase N utilization and reduce losses to the environment will be investigated in the field experiment: 1. acidification and 2. stripping of NH3 coupled with separate application of the solid organic and liquid mineral phases. Yields, N uptake, product and soil quality, and emissions of N2O and CH4 will be recorded in the field. Under controlled conditions, NH3 loss potential and the processes behind N2O and CH4 emissions will be studied after addition of biochar. Nitrate leaching will be measured in the parallel lysimeter experiment. To comprehensively assess the climate impact, C sequestration will be quantified after 6 years. The results will help to improve N utilization of organic fertilizers and reduce N surplus and emissions of climate-relevant gases. In addition, the climate effect of biochar use in arable farming will be evaluated comprehensively.
