While method development and suitability testing by European and national reference laboratories are well established, solid validation in most areas of food safety is complicated by the fact that the accuracy of the measurements is not metrologically traceable, as required by certified reference materials and internationally recognized reference materials and internationally recognized calibration and measurement facilities. As a result, there is a risk that innovation in Europe may be delaying or the exposure of European citizens to food-related health risks may be increased.
A European Food Safety Metrology Network (EMN-FS) involving the metrology community, reference laboratories and regulatory authorities, will verify accuracy and ensure traceability by sharing measurements and anchoring the measurement results in the International System of Units (SI). The JNP-w04 Food-MetNet project will accelerate the development of the EMN-FS and coordinate the metrological activities. METAS supports this EMPIR project as an unfunded partner.
