Kurzbeschreibung

The "Safe Resource Recovery and Reuse" (RRR) project was launched in 2011 with the aim to increase resource recovery from the sanitation system while at the same time safeguard public health. Based on the results of the 1st phase of global scoping (2011-2015), the 2nd phase of the RRR project was launched in 2015 to "promote and implement globally and at commercial scale recovery and safe reuse models of resources generated from liquid and solid waste streams to promote food security, cost recovery in the sanitation sector, and livelihood opportunities, while afeguarding public health and the environment" in poor urban and peri-urban areas in Kampala and Lima, supported by the Sanitation guidelines of the WHO. The "Safe Resource Recovery and Reuse" (RRR) project was launched in 2011 with the aim to increase resource recovery from the sanitation system while at the same time safeguard public health. Based on the results of the 1st phase of global scoping (2011-2015), the 2nd phase of the RRR project was launched in 2015 to "promote and implement globally and at commercial scale recovery and safe reuse models of esources generated from liquid and solid waste streams to promote food security, cost recovery in the sanitation sector, and livelihood opportunities, while safeguarding public health and the environment" in poor urban and peri-urban areas in Kampala and Lima, supported by the Sanitation guidelines of the WHO. Conclusion: the 2nd phase of the RRR project has achieved most of the objectives set in the appraisal documents and the ToR, planned with reasonable objectives and indicators, and a feasible methodology. For a variety of reasons, the two project components in Kampala and Lima have been implemented differently. The component in Kampala is essentially a successful sanitation project - but not so much a "RRR/Circular Economy" project. The Lima project emphasizes more on the RRR issues, but did not manage to promote RRR opportunities into the private sector. However, one can expect that the new RRR oriented legal + institutional framework will facilitate future business entries and developments in the sector. The third component of the Project (WHO SSP) has been successfully promoted and integrated into national and local undertakings and contributed to the global scaling up of safe sanitation management processes for health and environmental protection. The experience is now used in other countries.
