Methanol is an important building block for chemical syntheses and can be used as fuel additive. It is currently produced in large-scale plants from synthesis gas (CO, H2, CO2), which is predominantly derived from natural gas. However, the commonly used technology of high-pressure methanol synthesis is not suitable for small, decentralized biogenic CO2 sources, as it becomes disproportionately more expensive in a scale-down.The aim of this project is therefore to develop a process for producing methanol that is suitable for small scale, decentralized biogas plants. To assess the competitiveness of the novel methanol production route, its efficiency, cost and CO2 mitigation potential will be compared with that of other possible uses of biogas.
