The project aims at the investigation of the impact of replacing LNG by alternative, carbon-reduced gas fuels in lean premixed combustion systems as used today in many large Dual-Fuel (DF) engines. The “Flex-OeCoS” test facility at FHNW-ITFE is ideally suited for the planned fundamental studies of ignition and combustion both in the main chamber of such engines and the associated pre-chambers and will be appropriately enhanced. Starting from a reference case with natural gas, the impact of variations of the fuel gas mix at conditions relevant for these engines will be assessed by measurements of key parameters. The experimental investigations will be accompanied by extensive computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations, which support the development of the facility and the assessment of the experimental data. Moreover, they facilitate the transfer of the results, which includes the establishment of the requirement specification for a single-cylinder engine prototype application.
