Short description
(English)
Both soil moisture and evapotranspiration are key elements of the Earth system. In particular, evapotranspiration builds the link between the water, energy and carbon cycles and is thus highly relevant for climate and hydrological applications. Soil moisture being the lower boundary for the atmosphere over land is impacting evapotranspiration through its influence on the partitioning of the available energy at the Earth surface into sensible and latent heat fluxes. Soil moisture also constitutes the water that is directly available to plants and thus the main water source of most ecosystems. Also, the amount of water stored in the soil impacts the generation of runoff and groundwater recharge.
