Kurzbeschreibung
(Deutsch)

Kurzbeschreibung
(Englisch)

The design of cubicles for dairy cows has to consider both animal welfare (more space) and hygiene (less space). The increase in cow size has accentuated this problem. Moreover, the variety of cubicle partitions makes it difficult to assess their effect on animal welfare in the Swiss authorisation procedure for mass-produced installations. The project has four objectives: (1) to develop and validate an innovative, sensor-based method to objectively determine the quality of lying-down and standing-up movements; to apply this method for (2) assessing the effect of different types of cubicle partitions used on commercial farms on animal welfare and for measuring the effects of (3) cubicle dimensions and (4) the position of the neck-rail on the behaviour of dairy cows and heifers. The new method will simplify the authorisation procedure regarding cubicle partitions. The results are important for the further development of the Swiss Animal Welfare Ordinance and will result in recommendations for cubicle design.

Projektziele
(Englisch)

The aim of the study is to optimise the authorisation procedure regarding cubicle partitions for cattle and to further develop the design of cubicles to improve animal welfare. The project has 4 objectives:

  • To develop and validate an innovative, sensor-based method to objectively measure the quality of lying-down and standing-up movements and to automatically detect hits against cubicle partitions.
  • To apply this method for assessing the effect of different types of cubicle partitions used on commercial farms on animal welfare.
  • To use this method to measure the effects of cubicle dimensions on the behaviour of cows and heifers.
  • To apply this method to assess the effect of the position of the neck-rail on the behaviour of dairy cows differing in body size.
