The rearing of lambs/kids from dairy sheep and goat not used for breeding is challenging for farmers with regard to marketability, profitability, and labour input. This poses an inherent risk for animal welfare. However, to date in Switzerland no profound information is available on the welfare of lambs/kids until slaughter. The aim of this project is to analyse the current situation regarding the fattening of dairy goat kids and dairy sheep lambs, to assess the health status attainable in good agricultural practice, to identify critical issues for animal welfare and to relate these findings to the profitability of different fattening methods: 1) TVD data will be analysed to track dairy lambs/kids and to estimate relevant parameters, e.g. mortality. 2) By means of on-farm data collection, this study will provide scientific knowledge on the management and housing conditions used, the health status, and the performance of fattening lambs/kids in relation to the rearing conditions (e.g. at mother/artificially; reared on farm of birth/fattening farm).
