In a first step the actual heating costs were calculated for three different heating systems: heat pumps, natural gas- and oil; heatings. Whereas the heating costs of large 'water/water heat pump systems are close to those of competing systems, smaller heat pump systems are still too expensive as long as the consideration is strictly economical. The utility companies should take the opportunity to introduce a more favorable rate for interruptable energy supplies. In this oase there is a considerable potential where no further power plants are necessary to feed additional heat pumps. Consequently, basing on nuclear- and hydropower, the environmental impact determfned by the method of fife cycle assessment for heat pump systems is excellent. This aspect should be used as a marketing tool in a more extensive way. In the future the ecological benefits and advantages over the competing systems should stronger involve legislation and authorities to promote these environmentally benign heating systems.
