Abstract (English)

The present study was commissioned by the Swiss Federal Office of Transport as part of the Energy Strategy 2050 in Public Transport. The study found that most Swiss transport companies recognize the strategic im-portance of energy issues and regularly take measures to improve their energy efficiency.

Practices vary greatly between companies, however, in terms of both the type and scope of measures taken and the extent to which measures are embedded in the companies’ corporate strategies. Often measures are not systematically planned and coordinated, but rather develop from initiatives of individual employees who are particularly sensitized to energy concerns.

This difficulty can be attributed to the fact that the companies’ managements give issues of costs, scope of services, and safety greater priority than questions of energy efficiency and the use of renewable energies. In addition, current regulations regarding compensation of uncovered costs (performance agreements and sub-sidies) hardly provide incentives for reducing energy costs.
