As a consequence of switching to low sulphur fuels for power and heat production, improvements in energy efficiency, flue gas desulfurization in industrial facilities all partly imposed by international legislation (UNECE Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution and economical structural changes in Eastern Europe, sulphur emissions/depositions in Europe declined over the last decades. However, air pollution still is a problem in Europe due to (among others) far less decreasing emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particularly ammonia (NH3) resulting in total nitrogen (N) becoming the dominant air-borne pollutant.
