The pilot project was designed to provide economic and psychosocial support for men and women who had escaped trafficking. Beneficiaries were provided with vocational training, grants, marketing and other business support to open a micro-business in their community. The project was designed as an action research, to test the implementation model with an eye toward future expansion, in the main phase. The project worked with 60 men and women to test out the model. There were many lessons learnt from the action research, as listed below:1. Beneficiary selection is the key. The eligibility criteria has to be clear, to prevent incorrect selection of beneficiaries.2. Selection of beneficiaries from public shelter homes needs special attention, to bring out the beneficiaries.3. Group counseling was very appreciated by the beneficiaries. However, the length of the psychosocial counseling needs to be increased, for it to have a enduring impact on the beneficiaries.4. About 6 months needs to be allocated at the beginning to develop trust with the beneficiaries and their families. 5. In the main phase of the project, some other services may also have to be included - such as legal and healthcare support.6. Some components of the project did not bear fruit - such as involving students from universities and the private sector engagement.
