SDC has financially supported the african institution \"Integrated Rural Development and Natural Resources Conservation (IRDNC) between January 2005 and February 2011, with an amount of 4'725'000 Namibian dollars. The initial vision was to assist key stakeholders \"to turn white areas green\", i.e. to create a new corridor of parks and conservancies along the so-called Kwanda Ecological Corridor in the East Caprivi, therefore linking Zambia and Botswana through Namibia. SDC's contribution aimed at strengthening governance and institutional building, thereby enabling communities to meet the legal requirements and better ensure careful management and distribution of benefits to community members.Conservancies are self-defined common property management and social units. These unfenced multiple use areas are zoned by members for their livelihood needs, including crop and livestock farming, mixed wild and domestic grazing, as well as exclusive wildlife and tourism. In return for responsible management of wildlife, governments give a conservancy the rights over its consumptive and non-consumptive use. SDC's contribution has enabled IRDNC to support inter alia:- The introduction of management frameworks, including benefit distribution plans and wildlife utilisation plans.- An institutional event book system.- Financial governance, so as to increase the quality , accuracy and information flows on conservancy finances.- Conservancy constitution review and revision to respond to lessons and demands, and therefore ensure a better accountability of the conservancies.
