Because of their promising energy and environmental balance, cold mix asphalt (CMA) are a technique with high potential. However, it is crucial to increase the level of knowledge in the field of CMA, this in order to contribute to standardization and promote good practice with these materials. The main expected results are as follows:
• Extensive laboratory study of cold mix asphalt AC T and AC B (with/without RAP) and identification of potential critical performance and characteristics.
• Realization and follow-up of three test sections, this for the implementation and validation of the laboratory results.
• Drawing up of recommendations related to the consideration of CMA in a pavement design procedure.
• Evaluation of the overall performance of cold mix asphalt, according to a decision-support methodology allowing to compare the alternatives base on different criteria (LCI,...)
• Identification of the field of application of CMA, proposal of recommendations related to follow-up and control tests.
• Contribution for EN and SN standardization and synthesis of good practice with cold mixes.

Kurzbeschreibung (Französisch)

En raison notamment de leur bilan énergétique et environnemental prometteur, les enrobés à froid constituent une technique au potentiel élevé. Il est cependant crucial d’augmenter le niveau de connaissance dans le domaine des enrobés à froid, ceci afin de contribuer à la normalisation et promouvoir la bonne pratique avec ces matériaux. Les principaux résultats attendus sont les suivants :
• Étude approfondie en laboratoire d’enrobés à froid AC T et AC B (avec/sans RAP) et identification des performances et caractéristiques potentiellement critiques.
• Réalisation et suivi de trois sections test, ceci pour l’implémentation et la validation des résultats en laboratoire.
• Etablissement de recommandations relatives à la prise en compte des enrobés à froid dans une procédure de dimensionnement.
• Evaluation des performances globales des enrobés à froid, ceci selon une méthodologie d’aide à la décision permettant de comparer les variantes selon différents critères (ICV, …)
• Identification du domaine d’application des enrobés à froid, propositions de recommandations relatives aux essais de suivi et contrôle.
• Contribution pour la normalisation EN et SN et synthèse relative à la bonne pratique avec les enrobés à froid.

The major objective of the project is to perform a global assessment of the mechanical performances and application domain of cold mix asphalt (CMA). More specifically, the project aims at determining under which conditions CMA  can be laid as a subbase/bearing  course (AC T) or as a base (AC B) course, this instead of hot mix asphalt. To achieve this, a complete evaluation including laboratory and in situ tests as well as some considerations related to pavement design and global evaluation (LCI…) will be performed. The project will finally permit to update standards and promote good practice.

L’objectif du projet est la réalisation d’une évaluation globale des performances mécaniques et du domaine d'application des enrobés à froid. Plus spécifiquement, le projet s'intéresse à déterminer dans quelle mesure ces enrobés peuvent être posés en couche de portance (AC T) et/ou de liaison (AC B), ceci à la place d’un enrobé à chaud. Pour cela, une étude approfondie comprenant essais en laboratoire et in situ ainsi que des considérations relatives au dimensionnement et à l’évaluation globale (ICV, …) de l’enrobé sera réalisée. Le projet permettra finalement la mise à jour de la normalisation et promotion de la bonne pratique.
