Modern heavy duty diesel engines achieve brake thermal efficiencies around 45%. Since fuel consumption is very important for customers in the heavy duty vehicles sector, the increase of efficiency is a major topic in current R&D. Today, heat transfers to the combustion chamber walls account for an efficiency loss of approximately 13%. Within this proposed project, insulation coatings should be manufactured and characterized for the insulation of steel components inside a combustion chamber.
