Selective small molecule LFA-1 inhibitors to restore self-protective immune privilege in non-infectious posterior uveitis.
Abstract
(Deutsch)
Non-infectious posterior uveitis is a sight-threatening inflammatory eye disease which accounts for 10% of preventable blindness, despite currently available therapies. There is a high need for medications which not only provide sight-saving efficacy yet also lasting protection against disease. The goal of this project is to advance such potential therapy, a newly discovered class of small molecule compounds selectively inhibiting the integrin lymphocyte function-associated antigen-1 (LFA-1), to pre-clinical proof-of concept (PoC) and drug candidate status. The current project is expected to be followed by toxicology studies enabling clinical entry and subsequent clinical exploration of an innovative sight-saving regimen, aiming to restore the eyes natural immune privilege for potential freedom of disease.
