Abstract (German)

Smooth and wear-resistant coatings based on tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C) will be developed in an industrial coater using Oerlikon Surface Solutions's S3p, a HiPIMS-type deposition technology that allows producing plasmas with very high ionization degrees. These are necessary to obtain the targeted coatings' hardness of > 35 GPa. The experimental work will be complemented by atomistic simulations to identify ways on reducing residual stresses while maintaining high hardness levels, ample characterization and industrialization of these new ta-C coatings.
