Highly sensitive diagnostic assays are mandatory for large-scale screening of humans and intermediate-host snails in control programmes moving towards schistosomiasis elimination. Swiss TPH and Biolytix AG will develop and validate a highly sensitive and specific, robust, high-throughput real-time (RT)-PCR system for monitoring progress towards urogenital schistosomiasis elimination in Africa, for surveillance after elimination has been achieved, and to certify urogenital schistosomiasis elimination in formerly endemic countries.
