Kurzbeschreibung
(Englisch)

This project intends to produce a systematic mapping the development and production of automated and autonomous weapons systems and related commercial technologies. The aim is to produce an evidence-based picture of the technological and industrial developments that are enabling increasing autonomy in weapons systems, and thereby contribute to more concrete and structured duscussions on LWAS at the CCW.

The research project will be implemented in two phases. The ojectives of the initial phase (phase I - already funded, not covered by this application for funding) of the project are to:

- identify an describe relevant systems and the underlying technologies on which they are created;
- identify the locations (countries, industry sectors and companies) where they are available or are being developed.

the objecitves of the second phase (Phase II) are to:

- Describe the current state of expert assessment of automation and autonomy in weapon systems: what is possible now and what can be expected in the foreseeable future
- Describe the drivers and trends that promote investment in the military and commercial technologies that are relevant for autonomous weapons systems.

Projektziele

A progress report (SIPRI Background Paper 3) analyzing the state of play of "autonomy" in weapon systems and the underlying technoligies. The report will include tables presenting capabilities of key systems/technologies and the prospects for technological progress, as well as a graph summarizing in an integrated fashion the capabilities of the systems and technologies.
