In December 2015, George Mason University in Washington was asked by the Burundian authorities to provide expertise to the National Commission for the inter-Burundian Dialogue (CNDI). One of the current preliminary findings supposed that the population requests the modification of the Arusha Agreement and the Constitution.
Many national and international observers fear that these requests could further contribute to political and ethnic tensions in Burundi. They also expressed doubts about the impartial and genuine character of the process. For this reason, the objective of the project is to launch an evaluation of the current inter-Burundian dialogue by international independent experts from George Mason University. In order to allow an informed discussion on the structure of a relevant national dialogue, the experts will, in late May, présent their findings to the Member States of the Burundi Configuration of the UN Peacebuilding Configuration as well as to international and regional facilitators in New York. The CNDI will be invited to participate in this meeting.
