COST-Action ES1303 - TOPROF: Towards Operational ground based PROFiling with ceilometers, Doppler lidars and microwave radiometers for improving weather forecasts
Kurzbeschreibung
(Englisch)
A new generation of high-resolution forecasting models run by National Meteorological and Hydrological Services is now operational over Europe. Such models promise to provide increasingly accurate high-resolution forecasts of impending hazardous weather and meteorological situations. If this promise is to be fulfilled then a new generation of high-density observations through the lowest few km of the atmosphere, including the boundary layer, is required in real-time. Project TOPROF is aiming at fulfilling this requirement. In Switzerland expertise in remote sensing of the atmosphere with ceilometers, Raman lidar and microwave radiometers is available at MeteoSwiss and the University of Bern since many years. With the present proposal we aim at contributing to the COST-action with the operation of all these instruments on a regular and concerted basis and by an optimal characterization of instrumental aspects of the instruments with respect to use them in a network. We further aim at a harmonization and improvement of the data processing of the Swiss microwave radiometer network by improving the retrieval of temperature profiles under the presence of clouds. The COST action aims at using ground based remote sensing in data assimilation in NWP models. The generation of observation minus background (O-B) statistics is the first step towards data assimilation and therefore O-B statistics shall be generated for the Swiss MWR network and the COSMO NWP model run by MeteoSwiss.
