Short description (German)

Die Treibhausgasflüsse der Schweiz im Landnutzungssektor werden für Flächenkategorien bestimmt, die aus der Arealstatistik abgeleitet wurden. Für die erste Inventarisierung gemäss den gültigen Richtlinien wurden diese sogenannten Kombinationskategorien 2005/06 auf der Grundlage von Experteneinschätzungen zusammengestellt. Mit den seit Kurzem verfügbaren landesweiten Baumbiomassedaten (vgl. z.B. 16.0025.KP Baumbiomasse im Nichtwaldareal) ist es erstmals möglich, die damaligen Annahmen hinsichtlich eines relevanten Kohlenstoffpools für alle Landnutzungen zu überprüfen – und in einem Folgeschritt zu verbessern. Die Verifizierung begegnet auch einer Empfehlung der UN-Reviewer (ARR 2014 §51).

Transfer and application (English)

The evaluation found only limited corroboration for the current combination categories (CC) in land feature data for climate, soil, biomass and management practice. A system-oriented and stratification-independent approach was suggested: Instead of putting further efforts into the current or alternative sub-categories classification schemes, it appeared advisable to drop the sub-categories and work only with the six top-level categories mandatory for the GHG Inventory. In doing so, much more effort should be put into classification independent quantifications. Above ground tree biomass of Price et al. (2017) is a good example, where equal data is available for Switzerland irrespective of any a priori classification. Generally, quantifications for the GHG Inventory LULUCF sector need to focus on relevant key system properties and variables. All quantification efforts in the LULUCF sector should therefore align with the key variables and not be divided or segmented a priori based on the top-level categories or any other classification.
