Contexte

The provision of rural advisory services (RAS) can increasingly count on accessible mobile phone networks, thus reaching farmers in remote areas in a cost efficient way with up-to-date production and market information. The present project “bundles” key services for smallholder farmers from the private sector, research and public actors with financial service providers and mobile telecom companies.

Objectifs

Increased food and livelihood security of male and female farmers as a result of accessing bundled RAS and financial services through mobile technology platforms.

Groupes cibles

Smallholder farmers without bank accounts, living on less than USD 2 per day in selected rural areas of Indonesia, Uganda and Zimbabwe with a focus on women and youth.

Effets à moyen terme

  • Outcome 1: Sustainable and scalable business models for the delivery of bundled RAS and financial services are established.
  • Outcome 2: Male and female smallholder farmers have access to, and make accurate use of, RAS and financial services.
  • Outcome 3: Knowledge of business models, services and products is captured and shared widely to influence policy, share learning and enable replication.

Résultats

Principaux résultats antérieurs:

  • Through mobile phones, 180’000 smallholder farmers have accessed financial and/or information services, and have come to realise the role and value of mobile technology.
  • The project has given smallholder farmers the opportunity to access bundled financial and information services. These services have begun to improve their farming activities and income and to positively impact their livelihoods.
  • Access to agricultural and market information disseminated through public-private service platforms has improved the income of smallholder farmers by maximising informed decision-making: Weather information has guided farmers on timely ploughing, planting and weeding. Financial literacy messages have improved financial management. Mobile payments have contributed to increased efficiency and cost-effectiveness of farming activities particularly for farmers who received payments from buyers of their produce.
