Assessment of the efficacy of treatment of patients with sickle cell disease with memantine (phase IIa-b trial|MemSID) using novel analytical techniques

Abstract (German)

Memantine, the NMDA receptor anatagonist is for the first time applied for treatment of patients with sickle cell|disease. The existing clinical lab test are insufficient to assess the effect of the drug on properties of the|circulating red cells. We suggest a battery of tests to evaluate red cell adherence, deformability, redox state,|calcium levels, volume and ion content using apporaches including novel microfluidic devices produced by our|industrial partners.
