We propose the development of a smart system for the recognition of the presence of pathogenic bacteria.|Our sensing element is composed of DNA, and acts by hybridization with bacterial ribosomal RNA and|subsequent release of a chemical moiety. The system is designed to be highly versatile and will be adapted|to the release of a colored substrate for sensing purposes or the release of a reactive substrate with antimicrobial properties for therapeutic purposes.
